What is ULEZ?

The ULEZ is a low-emissions zone in London that charges vehicles that do not meet certain emissions standards to drive within its boundaries. The ULEZ was first introduced in April 2019, and it initially covered the central London area. However, the ULEZ expanded to cover all of Greater London from August 29, 2023.

The ULEZ charges £12.50 per day for cars, vans, motorcycles, and heavy goods vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards. There are some exemptions to the ULEZ charge, such as for vehicles that are used for emergency services, taxis, and buses.

London ULEZ scrappage scheme

The scrappage scheme is a government-funded scheme that provides grants to help people scrap their old, polluting vehicles and buy new, cleaner vehicles. The scrappage scheme is being widened to make it easier for Londoners to switch to cleaner vehicles in response to the expansion of the ULEZ. Anyone living in one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London with an eligible vehicle will be able to apply to scrap a car or motorcycle.

• Any Londoner living within the extended ULEZ zone can scrap a non-compliant car for £2,000
• Grants for scrapping non-compliant vans and minibuses will increase by £2,000
• Grants for scrapping non-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicles will increase from £5,000 to £10,000
• Consumers will be able to use the grant as cash, meaning they can purchase their next vehicle from any retailer or private seller.

How do I apply for the London scrappage scheme grant?

• Consumers apply for the grant online through the Transport for London website - The information on starting your application is towards the bottom of the page.
• They will need to upload a copy of the V5c and proof of insurance – The V5c must be registered to the current keeper before 30th January 2022.
• The vehicle must be disposed by an Approved Treatment Facility (ATF) – You can locate an approved facility here
